The Department of Electrical Engineering (ESAT), Group Science, Engineering and Technology, at KU Leuven is looking for a research expert in the domain of decision support for grid operators, aggregators in the distribution networks. Further, energy management policies will be developed for prosumers and large consumers in the distribution networks. The research expert will be part of the ELECTA research group as part of EnergyVille. The research expert will actively contribute to implement and further develop the research roadmap on decision support for grid operators. The roadmap aims to develop new decision-making models and tools for system operators in the domains power system planning, operation, security and reliability. The developed tools can range from conceptual proof of concept tools to large scale implementation in demonstration projects.

  • Researching innovative solutions for power system decision support for DSOs (and TSOs).
  • Developing your own research within the group and collaborate with other research experts, postdoctoral researchers and PhD students within the decision support group. Co-supervise PhD students in your field of expertise.
  • Perform research in the domain of network-aware energy market participation of flexibility resources, optimization and operational control algorithms in distribution networks for different stakeholders, and applying machine learning, data-driven models for power system applications.
  • Contributing to monitoring the EnergyVille research roadmap on decision support for grid operators, leading the distribution systems aspects.
  • Contributing to and developing funding proposals for new research projects and industrial projects based on the developed expertise.
  • Making policy recommendations for the DSOs for increasing distribution network resilience towards fluctuations and uncertainty.
  • Dissemination of expertise and research in academia and in master’s level teaching (optional).
  • Maintaining and developing international collaborations with academic and industrial partners.
  • Representing Electa / EnergyVille towards potential partners (TSOs, DSOs, equipment manufacturers, …).
  • Contributing to publications as well as independent publishing.


The ideal candidate has the following profile:

  • PhD degree in electrical engineering or computer sciences with minimum 3 years of post – doctoral research experience.
  • Expertise in algorithm development, power system modelling and optimization, including experience with industrial case studies.
  • Vast knowledge of power system modelling techniques and optimization (especially power flow modelling techniques).
  • Knowledge of energy market design.
  • Knowledge of machine learning and data driven algorithms.
  • Knowledge of modelling languages for optimization (Julia, Python, Matlab, GAMS etc.) and software development skills.
  • Experience in managing research projects and contributing to project proposals.
  • Experience in power system planning, operation & control, power markets and regulatory affairs.
  • Excellent networking and presentation skills.
  • Fluent in English, both written and spoken.
  • A strong publication record.
