The Ameloot group is part of the KU Leuven ​Centre for Membrane Separations, Adsorption, Catalysis, and Spectroscopy (cMACS), which counts 6 PIs and >100 members. The study of porous materials, membranes, films and their interfaces forms the core of the research at cMACS. In this context, we study different flavors of porous and hybrid matter. Our research is focused on enabling applications based on these materials through a fundamental understanding of their formation processes and properties. We are looking for a motivated postdoctoral research fellow to synthesize novel proton-conducting materials with a hybrid metal-organic composition and/or based on composites of multiple materials. Methodologies will be developed to deposit thin films of these materials, both for separator applications and electrode coatings. In addition to targeting fundamental insights, the measurements will cover conditions directly relevant for a novel electrolyzer design focused on higher-efficiency hydrogen production. In addition, you support other group members through your knowledge of impedance spectroscopy (both experimentally and data analysis), and are happy to share your thoughts on related projects (e.g., on electrocatalysis).


We are looking for:

  •     A motivated candidate with a strong academic track record and a PhD in Materials Chemistry, Physics, or a related field in Science and Engineering.
  •     A candidate passionate about novel materials and technology, and willing to work as part of an interdisciplinary team.
  •     An experienced researcher willing to guide younger colleagues starting out in the field.
  •     Previous demonstrations of out-of-the-box thinking. Bonus points if you consider yourself a 'maker' and practical problem solver, we appreciate what you are doing!
  •     Since we target real-world applications through our research, an interest in valorization (e.g., spin-off creation) is a plus.
  •     Since we are a highly international team, proficiency in both written and spoken English is non-negotiable.

  •     Required: Expertise in the synthesis and characterization of novel materials / composites.
  •     Required: Expertise in impedance spectroscopy (e.g., to determine ionic conductivity values of solid materials; to understand the behavior of dielectrics).
  •     Experience with electrolyzers or other electrochemical setups that require ion conduction is a plus.
  •     A broad interest in electrochemical devices and applications is a plus.
  •     Experience with / interest in ionic liquids for electrochemical applications is a plus.
