The Electrical Energy & Computer Architectures Electa division covers the broad spectrum of electrical energy systems and robust control of industrial systems. The development of the future smart grid is the key activity.
As the largest research group on electrical energy systems in the Benelux, Electa wants to be recognized as a center-of-excellence on these topics, where fundamental research is combined with immediately and prospectively applicable solutions for the industry.
Alongside this development of know-how, it is important to share gained knowledge with the academic community, students, industry and the society as a whole.

This one year research project is part of the European Training Network (ETN) project entitled InnoDC  (Innovative tools for offshore wind and DCgrids) under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Programme 

The main focus of this project is to analyse the dynamic stability of power converters, starting from a detailed evaluation of how to represent converters and their surrounding AC power systems for system-wide dynamic stability analysis.

Due to the largebandwidth of the converters and their controllers, dynamic interactions withthe surrounding AC systems are no longer necessarily limited to low-frequencyinteractions, but can also include higher frequency resonances between the ACsystems and different converters, amplified through the converter controls.

These relatively new types of interactions are challenging the use of traditional phasor-based analysis tools for studying the system dynamics.

The project aims at investigating in depth how to select the boundary between EMT and phasor-based simulations, and investigate the potential of co-simulation methods for systems with a high penetration of power electronic converters.


As the ideal candidate:

  • You have a Master of Science degree in electrical engineering, with a solid background in power systems or power electronics and experience in control engineering, preferably from a reputable institute from a country within the European Economic Area.
  • You must fulfill the Marie Skłodowska-Curie ETN ESR requirements.
  • You should have obtained excellent study results.
  • You should have the ambition to become a junior expert in power electronics modelling and HVDC grid control and be highly motivated for a one year research project.
  • Interested to work in a team with experts studying different aspects of HVDC and power systems.
  • You have knowledge of power system simulation software (phasor-based and EMT-type software) and the representation of power electronics in power systems.
  • Experience with real-time simulation and hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) experiments is considered as an advantage.
  • You are able to communicate fluently in English, both orally and in writing. Knowledgeof the Dutch language is a plus.
