Description

Within the institute for materials research (imo-imomec) of Hasselt University and the LCP group of Gent University there is a PhD position on Cu(In,Ga)Se2/Perovskite (CIGS/Pk) thin film tandem solar cells. The combination of CIGS and Pk will allow for the development of tandem solar cells, which can be made lightweight and flexible. Both materials have high efficiencies > 20%, but are also known to contain mobile ions that diffuse over time. In this project, this effect will be examined for the CIGS/Pk tandem solar cells. A focus will be on the interconnection layers between the CIGS and Pk sub cells. Stand-alone devices will be prepared, measured and characterized. A model to understand these interconnection layers in the tandem structure is being developed at UGent and the student will work on the model to understand the electrical properties more in-depth.

This research will be performed in the EnergyVille laboratories in Genk, in collaboration with imec and the University of Gent, Research group: Liquid crystals and Photonic group. Besides being involved in the research and generation of scientific outputs, it is expected that the PhD student actively participates in the educational and outreach tasks of the faculty Engineering technology.

Profile

  • You hold a master or engineering degree in physics, materials sciences, electrical engineering, or equivalent.
Final-year students are (likewise) encouraged to apply.
  • You have experience with experimental work, programming (C++, Matlab, Python), are able to present scientific results, and have excellent reporting skills. A first scientific publication is an asset.
  • You have a problem-solving attitude and a strong desire to stay up to date with recent developments. You are able to work independently and are eager to take initiative and responsibility.
  • You have knowledge of device physics and experience in the domain. Being acquainted with photovoltaics fundamentals is an asset.
  • You are motivated to contribute to the didactic and outreach tasks of the faculty of Engineering Technology and you are able to arouse students' enthusiasm.
  • The research will be performed in collaboration with (and partly at) the University of Gent. Therefore, an (international) driver's license is an asset.

You will be appointed and paid as PhD student.
Scholarship for a period of 2 x 2 years, after positive intermediate evaluation.

The selection procedure consists of a preselection based on application file and an interview.
All interested applicants are invited to submit an application package including but not limited to 1. Motivation letter. 2. CV. 3. A self-written scientific text of 1-2 pages, describing the potential of chalcogenide materials and perovskite materials for tandem solar cells A preselection is conducted first based on the application package and further followed by an interview with few candidates for final selection. Please be advised that applications without research proposal are not considered for further evaluation.
