Samenvatting van het onderzoek / Summary of Research
The use of heat pumps for space heating and domestic hot water production are recognized as a means to reduce greenhouse gas emissions of buildings. With increasing sources of renewable electricity, this reduction can be further increased. However, the simultaneity of space heating combined with the variability of renewable electricity sources can result in periods with high residual loads in which strong polluting power plants are addressed. Using thermal energy storage to shift thermal loads can reduce the need for peak generation capacity and reduce the use of power plants with large greenhouse gas emissions. In this study, the life-cycle impact of residential heating with heat pumps and hot water storage tanks as a means of thermal energy storage is investigated.
