Samenvatting van het onderzoek / Summary of Research
Growing concerns about energy sustainability, security of supply and an increasing penetration of renewable energy sources (RES) are impacting the operation and the architecture of the electricity system. While currently placing a burden on the distribution grid, it is generally agreed that RES could also be used for active grid control, thereby contributing to a stable and secure grid. To accomplish this, new control systems have to be designed that are able to fully harness the potential of the RES.
The main goal of this research is to develop control algorithms for distribution grids in order to increase the penetration of RES. The control algorithms will employ the so called “Peer-to-Peer Control Architecture” to overcome the technical challenges associated with the integration of these resources and to ensure optimal operation of distribution grids, which will greatly improve the efficiency of power system, increase security and reliability of power supply and reduce the greenhouse gas emissions.
This type of architecture, inspired by Peer-to-Peer computer networking, is characterized by the absence of a central controller. It is a promising way for future control of the distribution grids. Since RES are typically highly distributed, operated by many different owners and with different objectives, it is desirable that the control system operates in a highly distributed way. Besides, a robust control system is needed that does not depend on a single point of failure.
