Samenvatting van het onderzoek / Summary of Research

This thesis develops the mathematical framework and methodologies to calculate the optimal operation of electrical High Voltage grids where theclassic alternating current (AC) grid is expanded with direct current (DC) connections, as with the Belgian NEMO (Belgium-England) and the ALEGrO (Belgium-Germany) projects, or with complete meshed DC grids onshore and offshore; even offshore wind power plants can be connected to these grids (e.g. the European Supergrid).

The innovative aspect of this research, besides the integration of the DC grids, is that the optimaloperation state is not only found for the base network: the algorithms can take the possible outage of one or multiple connections and generators into account.

All algorithms are implemented with the open-source software package MATPOWER and are free to use by the general public.
