Samenvatting van het onderzoek / Summary of Research

Dc protection system is the one of the key factors in order to build a reliable HVDC grid. Compared to the conventional ac protection system, the dc protection system has particular challenges because of the high rate of rise of the fault current, which results in very stringent time constraints on the dc protection system. In addition, the unavailability of standardization for dc grid operation and protection is considered a significant barrier for realization of the future dc grids. This research aims at developing multi-vendor dc grid protection systems which allow protection components (such as dc circuit breakers, relays and converters) from any vendor to be “plug and play”. This research will focus on developing general methodologies for analyzing dc fault behavior and developing protection algorithms, and defining requirements for main components in the dc grids.
