Samenvatting van het onderzoek / Summary of Research

Interaction of HVDC grids and AC power systems
A new transmission system is required that can connect the huge renewable energy resources ofnorth
and south Europe with the load centers located more centrally.A HVDC grid is considered to be
a likely option to connect these sources. Such a grid should be able to cover long distances, also
undersea, and provide a better economic performance than traditional AC systems. The existing AC
system will not be obsolete it will be operated inparallel to the new system. Thereby the interaction
between both systems has to be analysed and coordinated. Especially in the fields of

  • technical limits,
  • security,
  • disturbances,
  • frequency response and inertia,
  • communication,
  • scheduling and trading.

For this it is important that new tools are developed to simulate the behaviour of such fields. New models are also needed of the different transmission system components placed in this future grid.
This PhD project will focus on the operation of a hybrid AC/DC system, optimizing the system
behavior. The objective will be to develop a methodology to ensure an optimal system scheduling tak-
ing into reliability.
