The project 'Towards a Sustainable Energy Supply in Cities' is a part of the Strategical Action Plan for the Province of Limburg (Strategische Actieplan Limburg in het Kwadraat SALK) and enables EnergyVille to become an even better integrated top research centre, with 1.400m² lab infrastructure, top-notch equipment, expert teams and 14 groundbreaking demos, developed in close collaboration with the local industry. The research will serve as a magnet for international industrial partners. This project is a cooperation by the University of Leuven, VITO, imec and the University of Hasselt. It receives the support of the European Union, the European Regional Development Fund ERDF, Flanders Innovation & Entrepreneurship and the Province of Limburg.

Domain: Networks, Storage, Strategy & Markets, Buildings & Districts, Materials & Components
Period: 01-06-2015 to 31-05-2018

Within 'Towards a Sustainable Energy Supply in Cities', we will strenghten these three lines of research:

  • SolSthore - highly integrated PV systems in buildings, connected with smart grids and combined with battery storage
  • GeoWatt - thermal networks of the 4th generation that bring local demand and heat and cold demand of large groups of users in balance
  • SmarTHor - the techno-economic framework necessary to form CO2 neutral smart energy clusters integrating thermal and electrical energy alike.

For this research programme EnergyVille receives support from:

EFRO

For the expansion of their research ,EnergyVille receives 10 million euro support from the EFRO Flanders programme 2014-2020. This fund is one of the European structural funds which reinforces the economic, social and territorial cohesion between the European Union and limits inequalities between regions. The fund supports actions that contribute to sustainable economic development and employment creation, and the realisation of the Europe 2020 objectives.

Flemish Government - Flemish Ministry of Economy and Flemish Ministry of Energy:

The Flemish Government provides 7,500,000 euro by means of the Hermes Fund and the Ministry of Energy. The funds wish to contribute to a sustainable economic growth in Flanders by making innovation and entrepeneurship more accessible. It helps enterprises to change and grow by informing, inspiring and support them in every life cycle.

The Province of Limburg - ‘The place to be’ for innovative, creatieve entrepeneurs and ‘young high potentials’

When it comes to tourism, Limburg has successfully put itself on the map. We now also want to show our assets as an economic region from which you can conquer the world as an entrepeneur and invest in the welfare of the region tomorrow. How? By attracting new talent and new entrepeneurs. By providing 3,433,212 euro the Province of Limburg would like to make EnergyVille an attraction pole for energy enterprises at Thor Park in Waterschei, Genk.
